How to Play
Learn the basics, strategies, and tips for mastering skill-based Mahjong Solitaire on Majestic Mahjong.
Welcome to Majestic Mahjong, where skill, strategy, and practice make all the difference. Mahjong is a traditional game of skill that has captivated players for generations. Whether you're new to the game or brushing up, this guide walks you through the basics, strategies, and tips for mastering our skill-based version.
The Basics
Objective: clear the board by matching pairs of identical tiles, using strategy and planning to find the best moves. Unlike chance-based versions, skill-based gameplay lets players compete on speed, accuracy, and overall performance.
How to Play
1. Starting the game
- Each game begins with a shuffled board of Mahjong tiles displayed face-up.
- The layout varies in complexity depending on the board you choose.
- Only free tiles — tiles that are not covered and have at least one open side (left or right) — can be matched.
2. Making matches
- Match pairs of identical tiles to remove them from the board.
- When a match is made, those tiles disappear, revealing new tiles that may become free.
- Continue until the board is cleared or no valid moves remain.
3. Game modes
- Daily Showdown (Ranked): everyone plays the same seeded board. Points are awarded for speed and accuracy, and your best score is ranked on the leaderboard. No undo or shuffle; hints cost points.
- Practice (Casual): a fresh random board with free hints, shuffle, and undo. Perfect for warming up — not ranked.
- Difficulty: boards range from The Grave of Fireflies (easy, 72 tiles) to Muddy River (medium) and Kagemusha (hard, the full 144 tiles).
Strategies for Winning
- Plan ahead. Think several moves forward and free up key tiles that block others.
- Free multiple tiles. Prefer matches that open up additional tiles to avoid deadlocks.
- Balance speed and accuracy. In timed modes, speed matters — but rushing causes mistakes.
- Work from the top down. Clearing upper layers often reveals hidden tiles and new matches.
- Study tile patterns. The faster you recognise matches, the better your score.
